What is the truth?

When I first started writing this story, I had an idea in mind where it would lead.

All I knew was that by the end of the story, a person who thought he knew what was right or wrong, would discover that the concept of right and wrong was just a matter of who told you what was right, even if it was wrong.

After all, he was on the right side, and doing good often meant doing anything and everything to ensure the bad buys didn’t win.

You know, the ends justify the means.

What if the one person you thought was on the side of truth and justice, was simply someone who wanted wealth and power and didn’t care how it was achieved?

The first draft of this story saw the main character, our protagonist, get sent on a mission that was compromised before it started.  What he thought was a mentor, and killed in action, and only just avoiding the same fate himself, was later portrayed as anything but the honourable man he thought he was.

It was meant to be a glimpse into the smile and mirrors world where nothing is as it seems.

In editing, the story seemed to take on a new life, and the true meaning of what the Enemy Within is about starts to come through.

It’s what I think I originally intended.

Are we no better than them?

At what point do you tell yourself that

• You are doing this for King and country
• The end justifies the means
• You are on the right side of justice
• Bad people get what they deserve
  

Can you truly tell yourself that doing to them what they did to you is morally justified?

I’m not sure Jack is fully across what it is he has to do in order to find out what he wants to know.

It’s fine to tell yourself it’s what they do to you when the roles are reversed, but the question had to be, is there another way?

Well, the first interview went as expected. No information told that they know nothing, they are just foot soldiers told to act on orders, not question them, and no they don’t know who the person is that sent on your mission other than the operations officer.

The fix-it men, those who are little more than thugs in cheap suits are a case in point. They dish out the violence to achieve an end or carry out an assassination when asked.

He tried to do it the easy way. He soon learns there is no easy way.

It’s an even worse turn of events when the search for the guilty goes utterly array. Secret organisations are supposed to conduct secret operations, operations that no one but themselves is aware of.

That generally means leaving no loose ends.

In this case, we have two, Jack and Evelyn. Wally is dead, and Luigi is missing and presumed dead.

Because there are two loose ends, suddenly there are six more, a doctor, two interrogators, a fixit man, an actress, and a deputy director.

All have a story to tell, or perhaps not, but one way or another, Jack is going to get to the bottom of the affair.

And when he discovers who instigated everything, he is utterly astonished.

They’re tied up in an empty factory in the middle of a construction zone, with little chance of getting out of there alive. There’s no upside, to their situation, talk or not, they know they are not going to walk away.

Is there a deal to be made?

Not as far as Evelyn’s concerned. The problem is she is still too hazy about what happened, and can’t exactly remember what it was they wanted to know, and she still has only part of the story.

They need leverage, something on them that will make their captives talk.

Time to set Millie, their computer expert free to do some deep digging into their collective lives.

I looked up the meaning of the statement and apparently, it means that the revenge is not immediately invoked, one waits until some time has elapsed to exact it.

Good perhaps, because it might be right at a time when the victim doesn’t need it.

Bad for the one handing it out, he or she has to wait, and that requires a special brand of patience.

Unfortunately for the gang, Evelyn has no patience or remorse.

It’s more like do unto others as they would do unto you.

Everyone lies

…

Of course, they do, this is espionage at it’s finest. If everyone told the truth, we wouldn’t need spies, would we?

Then, of course, there are different versions of the truth, half-truths, perhaps, little white lies, and then just the truth but so much is omitted, it’s like reading a novel without the last chapter.

Hang on, wasn’t there a series on TV about just that?

Well, no one is telling Jack all of the story, so he has to find it out for himself, with a little help from his father, and friends, but just how far can he trust any of them?

But before he can worry about that, he receives a mysterious text message from the number of the phone that he gave Evelyn. He was not expecting her to use it.

It will provide a little welcome relief from being hunted by the people who are looking for Luigi Marchesi, and or the stolen cryptocurrency. If it is indeed about that because it had implausibility written all over it.

Back to Evelyn….

She’s had a hard time of it, but rescue is imminent, and revenge, well, that’s been keeping her from that edge tortured people reach and more often than not go over.

Just remember, revenge is best served cold. And, really, I don’t know why that is so.
