“Betrayal” – the penultimate final draft – Day 34

I’m sure I’ve been down this road more than once, and with the same novel, but whereas the last edit, which was probably the second or third, finished up in the pile, then forgotten.

I’m doing an active update to all my works in progress, and sending them to the editor, after going through the manuscript once again, with a view to publishing.  Hopefully, before the year is out.

It’s been nearly a week since I’ve put a word to paper, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking about it.

And, today, I set aside some time to complete the last chapter of section 2, and in the process, make some amendments to the penultimate chapter of that section.

It changed the word count for that chapter to 1,031 up from 919 and added 2,155 words for the last chapter.

I’ve also tidied up the plan for the last four chapters of section 3, one of which had been done, leaving three.

Then it will be a matter of writing the epilogue, or section 4, which was going to have four chapters, but it now seems like it might be two, or three depending on how events work out.

Also, I had got all the chapters in their relevant files, and formatting, ready to be combined into the first draft of the book.

So far the total words written is 82,690, far more than I expected.

“Opposites Attract”

There’s always a downside.

…

So, our couple have made a breakthrough.  She realises that he loves her, and makes that startling discovery, that she has very strong feelings for him.

Pity that he’s from the figurative wrong side of the tracks.  People in her family marry who they’re supposed to, to perpetuate wealth and prosperity.

But, her father likes him, notices the change in her, and -, well, anything might happen.

Except…

She had a brother, a bully and a spiteful rich spoilt brat (not unlike his sister, whose behaviour was mostly why her new boyfriend kept this distance) who didn’t like him.

To underline his hate he gathers a few of his friends and when our boy is returned from a secret assignation with the girl, they waylay him.

Threats are made.  It is not unexpected by the boy.

And just as they are about to take him out the back, you know the routine, she comes back, and, well, let’s just say, it sucks to be a younger brother.

There’s no sleep after the ball, adrenaline running high.  She calls, and they talk.

Today’s words:  2,353, for a total of 6,337.

I’m sure I’ve been down this road more than once, and with the same novel, but whereas the last edit, which was probably the second or third, finished up in the pile, then forgotten.

I have been working on the final chapters, and these are proceeding slowly.

The plot has been veering off course because new possibilities come to mind that will give me an ending that I didn’t think was possible.

But now, with a little tweaking over the previous five chapters, and going back to the start of the third section, a whole new scenario has come to life.

And no one will see it coming.

I certainly didn’t, because, in the original storyline, it was meant to have a happy-ever-after ending, each with a different person.

So, it doesn’t finish in quite the same manner for either of the two main characters.

In the meantime, I have to flesh out the major, major plot development!

Without the pressure of a time limit and no distractions, I was able to sit down and go over the plan for the last few chapters.

I had gotten to a point in the story where I was satisfied with what I’d written, but it did have ramifications later on, ramifications that were not in the original plan.

That later on, of course, is now, so once I’d looked at the plan, and read the previous two chapters to get my bearings, it was easier to write.

But…

Isn’t there always a but?

As I was writing, another thought came to mind. Some time ago I realised there needed to be another action sequence arising out of an event that had sparked an impromptu and ill-fated attempted kidnapping.

That had to be avenged, but in the rough draft I had already written, it didn’t figure in the ending.

Now it does, and I have written it, and it’s great.

Even if I say so myself.

Tomorrow I will be covering the fallout from this event.

“Opposites Attract”

It all came together in one dance

…

So, after yesterday, how do I go sorting out the words, and get the story underway.

As the heading suggests, I wrote the story around watching the Viennese Waltz in real-time, and if you play it starting at the exact right time, everything matches, the steps the movements, and their conversation.

Actually, I had to watch that Waltz about twenty times to get it right.

It kind of made me wish that I could have found the woman of my dreams and danced with her.  The fact is, the woman of my dreams, now my wife of 50 years, was an excellent ballroom dancer, and me, well, I’m the definitive two left feet, which I think may have been ne of her disappointments.

We could have made such a statement on the dancefloor if only I knew how!

As they say, it’s never too late.

But, the dancefloor is where our two main characters come together, and by the end of it, everyone knows what they themselves haven’t.

I feel a song coming on, ‘Love is in the air’!
